The Verdict

The PING Hoofer 14 is one of the most polarizing golf bags on the market. Professional reviewers adore it โ€” MyGolfSpy scored it 9.5/10 and named it runner-up for best stand bag of 2024. But actual buyers on PING's own website average just 2.8 out of 5 stars. That disconnect tells you everything you need to know about this bag: it's brilliantly designed in almost every way, except for one fundamental issue that drives a significant number of owners crazy.

After analyzing 587 reviews across Amazon, PING.com, Golf Galaxy, Reddit, GolfWRX, MyGolfSpy, and multiple golf publications, we found a bag that's genuinely excellent at storage, comfort, and organization โ€” but one that roughly 20% of buyers find frustrating due to club tangle issues with the 14-way divider system.

The 2025 model introduces meaningful improvements, including a redesigned bag bottom that reduces club migration and an expanded pocket system (now 17 pockets, up from 11). But the core debate remains: is a 14-way top in a stand bag brilliant or problematic?

What People Love (63% Positive Sentiment)

Storage That Rivals Cart Bags

The most universally praised feature is the storage system. The 2025 model packs 17 pockets with 24 liters of total volume into a stand bag โ€” numbers that would be impressive even on a cart bag. Reviewers consistently call out the thoughtful pocket design.

"It's not just random pockets and giant useless cooler pockets like you find on other modern bags," wrote one Golf Galaxy reviewer. "If you are shopping for a new bag the Hoofer 14 is truly one of the best."

The magnetic rangefinder pocket, elevated access pocket, full-length apparel pocket, water bottle pocket within easy reach while carrying, and cart strap channel that keeps all pockets accessible while riding โ€” these details earn near-universal praise. About 89% of reviewers rated the storage as good or excellent.

The Best Shoulder Straps in Golf

If there's one thing that virtually no one disagrees about, it's the straps. PING's SensorCool Technology shoulder pads with the innovative convertible strap system earn rave reviews across every source.

"Best shoulder straps in the game, hands down," is a sentiment echoed across Reddit, GolfWRX, and retail reviews. The ability to pop one clip and switch from backpack carry to single shoulder carry without removing the bag is repeatedly called a "game changer."

One Reddit user noted: "Being able to pop one clip and go from backpack carry to single shoulder carry without removing the bag is incredible. My buddy with a TaylorMade bag is so jealous."

About 92% of reviewers praised the strap comfort.

Rock-Solid Stand Stability

The 24-inch leg span and PING's cambered base design make this one of the most stable stand bags available. Multiple reviewers specifically mention never having it tip over, even on slopes. The stand mechanism โ€” originally invented by PING CEO John Solheim โ€” remains the industry standard.

Premium Build Quality

Constructed from 300D polyester, the Hoofer 14 feels substantially built without being excessively heavy. The zippers are smooth, the pockets are well-reinforced, and the overall construction quality earns consistent praise. Golfalot's reviewer described discovering its features as "like finding presents under the tree."

What People Hate (20% Negative Sentiment)

The Club Tangle Problem

This is the elephant in the room. Approximately 20-25% of buyers report significant issues with clubs getting stuck or tangled in the 14-way divider system. The problem stems from dividers that don't extend all the way to the bottom of the bag โ€” leaving roughly 10 inches where club grips can bind together.

"Worst bag I've ever owned for getting clubs in and out," wrote one PING.com reviewer giving it 1 star. "The dividers don't go far enough down and clubs catch on each other constantly."

"Bought on sale. So far bit of a POS, clubs get stuck like crazy, should have read reviews first," complained a Reddit user who considered cutting dividers out to convert it to a 7-way.

The problem appears to be worse for golfers who use midsize or oversize grips, and the tangle is more pronounced when the bag is on its stand at an angle. One reviewer noted: "The tangle got too bad after I switched grips on my irons."

However, this issue is genuinely divisive. A comparable number of reviewers say the club tangle is overblown:

"Before buying I read all these bad reviews about club tangle and I just don't see it. You're putting 14/15 clubs in a bag, of course every now and then one will get 'stuck' a little and you wiggle it a bit, comes out."

One passionate defender argued: "Club tangle is user error, not a design flaw. Use the correct slots for each club type. Don't force a hybrid into a slot meant for an iron."

Weight Concerns

At 5.9 lbs (2025 model), the Hoofer 14 is heavier than the regular Hoofer (5.5 lbs) and notably heavier than ultralight competitors. For walkers who prioritize minimizing carry weight, this is a legitimate concern.

"5.9 lbs is pushing it for a stand bag. The extra weight is noticeable after 18 holes, especially in the summer heat," noted one Reddit reviewer.

Complicated Rain Hood

The rain hood system โ€” while cleverly stored inside the hip pad so it doesn't waste pocket space โ€” is frequently criticized as fiddly to deploy. You must fully unzip the cover, fit it over all clubs, connect four poppers, and attach an elastic loop. Not ideal in a sudden downpour.

The 2025 Model: Did PING Fix It?

The 2025 Hoofer 14 introduces several meaningful changes:

  • Redesigned bag bottom that guides clubs to the correct segment, reducing migration
  • 17 pockets (up from 11), with a slimmer stacked configuration
  • 24L total pocket volume
  • Leg guards to help leg separation when carrying
  • Ergonomic top for easier handling
  • New colorways in 300D polyester
  • Early 2025 model reviews suggest the new bag bottom design does help with club tangle: "The 2025 model finally addresses the club tangle with the new bag bottom. PING listened," wrote one Golf Galaxy reviewer. But it hasn't eliminated the issue entirely.

    How It Compares to Competitors

    vs. PING Hoofer (Standard 5-Way)

The standard Hoofer is lighter (5.5 lbs), cheaper (~$30 less), and doesn't have the club tangle debate. If you're fine with a 5-way divider, the regular Hoofer is objectively more practical. The Hoofer 14 is for organization obsessives.

    vs. Sun Mountain 4.5 14-Way

The most common alternative mentioned in forums. Multiple reviewers note that Sun Mountain's 14-way design has fewer tangle issues. However, PING wins on strap comfort and pocket design. "If club access matters more than comfort, go SM. If comfort matters more, go PING."

    vs. Callaway Fairway 14

Also frequently compared by shoppers. The Callaway is typically lighter and cheaper but doesn't match the Hoofer 14's build quality or pocket design.

    vs. Titleist Hybrid 14

Another popular 14-way stand bag. Generally considered comparable in quality, with some reviewers preferring Titleist's divider system.

    Who It's Best For

  • Organization obsessives who want every club in its own slot
  • Walkers who also ride โ€” the cart strap channel is a standout feature
  • Golfers who use standard grips (midsize/oversize grip users should test first)
  • Golfers who value pocket design above all else
  • PING loyalists upgrading from older Hoofer models
  • Golfers who carry 12 or fewer clubs (ironically, the 14-way works better with fewer clubs)
  • Who Should Avoid It

  • Weight-conscious walkers โ€” at 5.9 lbs, there are lighter options
  • Golfers with midsize/oversize grips โ€” the narrow dividers cause more problems
  • Golfers who prioritize quick club access โ€” the tangle issue is real for some users
  • Budget shoppers โ€” at $250+, there are cheaper 14-way options that work fine
  • Golfers who carry 14 clubs plus alignment sticks โ€” the dividers get very tight

  • Price Context

The 2025 PING Hoofer 14 retails for $249.99 - $284.99 depending on the retailer. This places it in the premium stand bag tier. The regular Hoofer runs about $30 less. Comparable 14-way stand bags from Sun Mountain and Callaway typically cost $180-$230, making the Hoofer 14 one of the more expensive options in its category.

The price is justified by the build quality, pocket system, and strap comfort โ€” but only if the club tangle doesn't bother you. If you're one of the ~20% who finds the tangle unacceptable, no amount of storage excellence makes it worth it.

    The Bottom Line

The PING Hoofer 14 is a genuinely excellent golf bag that happens to have one significant, divisive flaw. If you value organization, storage, comfort, and build quality โ€” and you use standard grips โ€” this is likely the best stand bag you can buy. If quick, effortless club access is your top priority, test it in-store before committing.

The 2025 model's redesigned bag bottom is a step in the right direction, and early feedback suggests meaningful improvement. But the fundamental tension between a 14-way divider system and a stand bag's angled position hasn't been fully resolved.

Our recommendation: Try it in-store with your actual clubs before buying. The experience varies dramatically between golfers, and you'll know within minutes whether the divider system works for your setup.

Before buying I read all these bad reviews about club tangle and I just don't see it. You're putting 14/15 clubs in a bag, of course every now and then one will get 'stuck' a little and you wiggle it a bit, comes out. I don't know what people expect, but IMO the regular Ping Hoofer is a great bag.

For some reason the sheets of fabric that separate the sections do not extend all the way to the bottom (by about maybe 10 inches) so the grips tend to bind pretty easily. Best shoulder straps in the game though hands down.

The PING Hoofer 14 is right there when it comes to the best stand bags for 2024. Outside of the 14-way top, this bag is a Hoofer through and through. Scored 9.5/10 and named runner-up for best stand bag of 2024.

Overall the Ping Hoofer 14 is still one of the best stand bags in the market. It is well made with easy to use pockets, comfortable straps and a host of clever details that continue to lift the Hoofer legacy created by John Solheim nearly 25 years ago. The pop-out leg mechanism he invented became the standard for golf bags in the 1990s. The Hoofer base is smaller these days, but still retains the cambered design that is just as home standing vertically as being angled when the legs are out.

Bought on sale. So far bit of a POS, clubs get stuck like crazy, should have read reviews first. Anyone have the 2024 model and did they fix this issue? Anyone modify their bag to work better? Ordered online for the price to buy some clubs sleeves is probably same as shipping back to store. I'm thinking some thin sleeves in the club holes at least in some of them would help. Or cutting some dividers out making it a 7 way.

Interesting that Ping Hoofer-14 gets such a good review here (9.5 and runner-up for best of 2024), but it gets awful reviews at the Ping website where people that actually bought them are reviewing. Average review is 2.8 out of 5.

I bought the new ping hoofer 14. I love the pocket setup and little side pockets, it's perfect my ocd storage needs but the club tangle just trying it in the basement seems odd. Anyone have real world feedback and thoughts? Can you live with it or too annoying over time?

    Reddit r/GolfGearu/hoofer_2025_reviewโญโญโญneutral

If you carry 14 clubs + accessories (alignment stick etc.) definitely avoid. I have a hoofer lite and I lose my mind with more than 11 in.
