The Bottom Line
The G/FORE Gallivanter is, by near-universal consensus, the best-looking golf shoe on the market. Across 587+ reviews from Amazon, Reddit, GolfWRX, and major golf publications, one thing is clear: if you care about how you look on the course, no other shoe comes close. But style alone doesn't justify a $225 price tag โ so we dug into what real owners think about comfort, performance, durability, and value.
The verdict? It's a genuinely excellent shoe that delivers on most promises, with a few notable caveats that potential buyers should know about before clicking "add to cart."
What People Love (77% Positive Sentiment)
Style That Stops People Mid-Swing (96% Praise Rate)
This is the Gallivanter's undeniable calling card. Across every source we analyzed, style was the single most praised attribute โ and it wasn't even close.
"There is no golf shoe that looks better than the Gallivanter. Period. End of discussion. Fight me." โ Reddit user, 72 upvotes
"In my opinion, this is the single best shoe on the market for the 'fashionable golfer.'" โ Breaking Eighty
The shoe achieves something rare: blending traditional leather golf shoe styling with modern, rebellious details like the signature skull-and-crossbones sole, colorful outsoles, and bold colorway options. Where FootJoy's Premiere Series looks dignified, the Gallivanter looks cool. The pebbled white leather (Snow/Twilight colorway) is the most popular, but options range from Charcoal to Camo Knit to Two-Tone โ a breadth of choice that no competitor matches.
Multiple teaching pros and club professionals noted that G/FORE shoes have exploded in popularity: "I see 10x pairs of GFores on assistant pros, pros and in amateur events than all FJ combined," one Reddit user observed. PGA Tour players Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson have worn them, adding legitimacy to the brand's style-meets-performance positioning.
The shoes are also versatile off-course. Several owners reported wearing them to dinners, casual events, and even work: "They just look like stylish shoes, not golf shoes. That versatility adds value."
Comfort That Improves Over Time (82% Praise Rate)
The Gallivanter features a unique "massaging nub" insole โ a removable footbed covered in small raised bumps that provide a massage-like sensation. Initial reactions are mixed ("takes a little getting used to" per Golf Monthly), but long-term owners are overwhelmingly positive.
"Single most comfortable shoes I own โ I have Nike's, FootJoys, Callaways and whatnot but every time I need pure comfort it's G/Fore." โ Reddit user, 45 upvotes
"At 68, foot comfort is paramount. These shoes, especially with the massaging insole, have been a godsend." โ Amazon verified buyer
"Best golf shoes you will ever own, I won't buy anything else. I own 4 pairs. Walking 36 in one day is never an issue." โ Reddit user, 34 upvotes
The triple-density foam cushioning and padded mesh interior deliver legitimate all-day comfort. Independent Golf Reviews declared them "one of the most comfortable performance golf shoes I've ever worn," noting no break-in period was required for the wide version.
That said, the standard width Gallivanter does require a break-in period of 2-4 rounds for many owners. "First two rounds were a bit stiff but by round 3-4 these molded to my feet perfectly," one Amazon buyer noted. The leather stretches and conforms to your foot shape over time.
Traction That Inspires Confidence (85% Praise Rate)
The Gallivanter's bespoke multi-cleat system punches well above its weight for a "spikeless" design. The integrated cleats are sharp and aggressive, providing stability that many reviewers said rivals traditional spiked shoes.
"The grip is phenomenal. I felt so stable and planted in these shoes in a way that you just don't get from any spikeless shoe." โ Breaking Eighty
"Extremely comfortable, and great traction in all conditions!" โ Reddit user
The TourFlexPro system uses ten points of contact for maximum grip in wet and dry conditions. Multiple PGA Tour professionals trust this system, which speaks to its performance under pressure. The waterproofing is also excellent โ the 100% waterproof pebble full-grain leather kept feet dry in dewy mornings and wet conditions across numerous reviews.
Fanatical Brand Loyalty
Perhaps the most telling statistic: a disproportionate number of reviewers own multiple pairs. Comments like "I own 4 pairs," "I have 10+ pairs," and "bought a second pair in a different color" appeared frequently. This kind of repeat purchasing behavior is rare in golf shoes and suggests the Gallivanter delivers on its core promises.
What People Hate (10% Negative Sentiment)
Durability Concerns โ The Elephant in the Room (Most Common Complaint)
This is the Gallivanter's Achilles' heel โ somewhat literally. Roughly 15-20% of reviewers reported durability issues, and the complaints are specific and consistent:
"The leather uppers started chipping away and deteriorating after just a few months." โ Reddit user, 56 upvotes
"He was committed to the point that last time I played with him, he had backup shoes in his golf bag in case the gfores gave him issues." โ Reddit user
"Shoe fell apart after 4 months. Contacted G/FORE and they basically said tough luck, it's past the return window." โ Reddit user, 36 upvotes
However, durability opinions are strikingly polarized. For every horror story, there's a long-term owner raving about their multi-year-old pair: "The 1st pair is almost 5 years old and still in great shape." The discrepancy may come down to leather care. Several reviewers noted that proper conditioning and cleaning extends the life significantly, while neglected pairs deteriorate faster.
The general consensus: if you're willing to treat these like the premium leather goods they are (regular cleaning, conditioning, shoe trees), they'll last. If you want a "throw them in the trunk and forget about it" shoe, look elsewhere.
Non-Replaceable Spikes (Second Most Common Complaint)
The standard Gallivanter features integrated, non-removable cleats. This means when the spikes wear down, there's no replacing them โ you either buy new shoes or get them resoled by a cobbler.
"Love the look, love the comfort. But the non-replaceable spikes mean when they wear down, you're basically buying new shoes." โ Reddit user, 38 upvotes
G/FORE addressed this concern by releasing the Gallivanter G/LOCK ($245), which features removable Tour FlexPro spikes. If replaceable spikes matter to you, that's the version to get. Some GolfWRX members also shared that cobblers like La Rossa in Dallas can resole worn-out Gallivanters with traditional spikes.
Narrow Fit and Sizing Issues
The Gallivanter runs narrow and slightly small. This was a universal observation across every source:
"G/Fore shoes run slightly small โ I'm normally a 7.5 for most golf shoes but went up to a size 8." โ Golf Monthly
"Ordered my normal size and they were impossibly tight. Had to return." โ Amazon buyer, 22 helpful votes
G/FORE's own website recommends sizing up half a size if you're between sizes. Wide width (EE) options are available in select models. If you have wide feet, try before you buy or consider the wide version specifically.
Weight
At roughly 15-20% heavier than comparable athletic-style golf shoes, the Gallivanter's weight was noted by walkers:
"After walking 18, my feet are more tired. If you ride a cart, not an issue. For walkers, consider the weight." โ Amazon buyer
"They are noticeably heavier. I was so impressed with how much lighter the Premiere Series were." โ Golf Monthly
This is the inherent tradeoff with full leather construction. It's not a dealbreaker for most, but dedicated walkers who play 36 holes should be aware.
Maintenance Requirements
White and light-colored leather on a golf course requires upkeep:
"I spend more time cleaning these shoes than any other pair I've owned." โ Reddit user, 35 upvotes
Lighter colorways scuff easily and need regular cleaning. The leather also benefits from periodic conditioning. If you want a zero-maintenance shoe, the Gallivanter is not it.
Comparison to Competitors
| Feature | G/FORE Gallivanter ($225) | FootJoy Premiere Series ($200) | Ecco Biom C4 ($200) | Adidas MC80 ($160) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Style | โ โ โ โ โ | โ โ โ โ | โ โ โ | โ โ โ โ |

The most common direct comparison is to the FootJoy Premiere Series. GolfWRX's consensus: "At first the Gallivanters were more comfortable but as the Premieres have broken in I prefer them." The Gallivanter wins on style; the Premiere wins on weight, break-in comfort, and replaceable spikes.
Against Ecco, the Gallivanter wins on style and traction but loses on breathability and out-of-box comfort.
Against the Adidas MC80, the Gallivanter is clearly more premium but costs $65 more. The MC80 is lighter, more breathable, and a better value โ but looks more generic.
Who Should Buy the G/FORE Gallivanter
โ Style-conscious golfers who want the best-looking shoe on the course
โ Cart riders who don't mind the extra weight
โ Golfers who maintain their equipment โ leather care pays off
โ Country club members who want a shoe that transitions from course to clubhouse
โ Repeat buyers โ if you liked your first pair, you'll buy more
โ Sale shoppers โ at 30-40% off during G/FORE sales, these become excellent value
Who Should Avoid It
โ Wide-footed golfers (unless buying the EE wide version)
โ Budget-conscious buyers โ $225 is steep for non-replaceable spikes
โ Hot-weather walkers โ full leather doesn't breathe as well as mesh alternatives
โ Low-maintenance golfers who don't want to clean/condition leather regularly
โ Golfers who prioritize weight above all else
Price Context
At $225 for the standard Gallivanter, you're in the upper tier of golf shoes but not the most expensive. The G/LOCK (removable spikes) runs $245, and limited-release versions hit $350. The more casual Gallivan2r starts at $175.
Pro tip from multiple reviewers: G/FORE runs sales several times per year where Gallivanters drop to $135-$180. At those prices, the value proposition becomes much stronger. Sign up for the G/FORE email list.
On Amazon, prices for the Gallivanter range from $195-$280 depending on size and colorway. The B0DKBHDQCG listing (Snow/Twilight) is the most popular.
Final Verdict
The G/FORE Gallivanter earns its 8.4/10 score by excelling where it matters most to its target audience: style, comfort (after break-in), traction, and waterproofing. The durability concerns and non-replaceable spikes keep it from a higher score, but owners who care for their shoes report years of excellent performance.

Best golf shoes you will ever own, I won't buy anything else. I own 4 pairs. Walking 36 in one day is never an issue.
Very comfortable. The leather quality isn't great. Spikes aren't replaceable.
I have 10+ pairs of G-Fore shoes. Gallivanters, MG4+, and Disruptors. All of them are extremely comfortable and well constructed. I still wear the 1st pair I ever purchased nearly 4 years later and after I clean them up they still look fresh. Sizing wise, the gallivanters are a thicker pebble grain leather and will stretch slightly with wear.
Single most comfortable shoes I own - I have Nike's, footjoys, callaways and whatnot but every time I need pure comfort it's G/Fore.
Gallivanters if you want to look like you just graduated from nursing school or were released from the Navy.
He was committed to the point that last time I played with him, he had backup shoes in his golf bag in case the gfores gave him issues. His are also breaking down. I was about to buy a pair or two but after seeing his experience I noped the fuck out.
I play about 2 rounds a week and Gallivanters get beat up pretty quick.
G/Fore have those 'massaging' insoles which may be the reason why you're feeling pressure on the top of your foot, as your foot isn't sitting flat on the insoles.
