I am right there with you. I have had this same machine for a few weeks now. I've been \"dialing in\" this whole time, going through tons of \"good\" fresh beans, watching hours of YouTube videos, playing and changing and playing and changing.... I can't seem to get anything but SOUR shots. Seems like my pulls are all great in every other aspect - dose, time, crema, ratio, distribution, tamping, etc. etc. etc. (can you say \"rabbit hole\"?) - still just sour shots. I've considered putting this thing up on marketplace for sale at this point and just going back to my trusty Moka pot (which is awesome by the way). It HAS to be the machine, right? :-) What a discouragement. I just want a decent espresso I can make myself, or a latte for family that is not bad. Your video gives me a little hope. I'm glad I'm not the only one not smart enough to run this \"home-friendly\" machine. You can’t pull the portafilter out after grinding coffee without tamping, or the coffee spills everywhere. I also weigh out every shot of beans before putting in the grinder. The grinder is timer based so for consistency you need a scale. This would affect both models. So I grind, tamp, WDT, tamp again. Silly workflow. Another thing to mention is that in my experience, the express impress (and I’m sure the express too) cannot consistently pull back to back shots. I have to wait at least 5 mins or so between shots if I want to make a second cup or the machine will randomly over/under extract.","date":"2025-11-03","sentiment":"neutral"},{"productId":"breville-barista-exp","source":"reddit","sourceUrl":"https://www.reddit.com/r/BrevilleCoffee/comments/1on7ojt/advice_please_barista_express_vs_express_impress/","author":"waypointg","rating":null,"text":"Please get the Bambino plus a separate grinder. I hope what I'm making isn't how expresso generally taste...or else I probably won't be using the machine much. I hope someone can... 1. recommend a brand of coffee (ideally purchasable through Amazon or somewhere else that's easily accessible), 2. how should set the grind size on the machine (a number for the dial would be great) 3. the amount of coffee (either in weight or the notches that are on the machine) 4. anything else that you think I should know for getting the perfect expresso for the brand that you recommended The main thing I want to take away from this is that I simply don't know what a good shot of expresso tastes like, so I hope to create an experiment where I at least have a baseline or \"control group\" to compare to. A great way to get reliable, fresh coffee is to buy a subscription from a local or well-established roaster. They will mail you a fresh,12oz bag of coffee on whatever schedule you want. Counter Culture, Intelligentsia, and Stumptown are generally referred to as the Big 3 of Third Wave coffee, and aren't a bad place to start, but there are hundreds of excellent options out there- Partners, Bluebottle, Verve, Onyx, Tandem, Populace, Heart, Parlor... the list is almost endless. At first, just pick some beans that fill your nose with joy when you open the bag, and stick with it for a while. It will help you dial in your settings without the added variability of using different beans all the time. You ideally want to be using your beans about a week after they're roasted, and getting through them in a week or two. 2. Dialing in your grind size dose, and extraction time (they are all interrelated) is part of the art of espresso. There are a lot of ways to approach it, some more analytical and methodical than others. Watch some YouTube videos. Also, don't look for a \"setting number\" recommendation for your machine- it will almost definitely be wrong. Your grinder's settings are relative, not absolute. You need to get a feel for it using trial and error. I would shoot for the general target of pulling a 50-60ml shot in 20-30 seconds, and go from there. 3. Dosing by weight is the most accurate way to get a consistent product, but there's no \"magic number\" that's always best. Start at 18g of coffee for a double, and adjust up or down. Just remember that adjusting will also affect your extraction, so you may need to make fine adjustments to grind size as well. At the end of the day, espresso is an acquired taste. It's very intense, and not everyone enjoys it at first. There's nothing wrong with drinking coffee in whatever form you most enjoy, be that highly concentrated or not, with or without milk or sweetener. Learning to texture milk and make pretty latte art is part of the fun, and can be extremely rewarding. MY recommendation for a person new to espresso would be to start with Ethiopian coffees. They tend to have a more delicate \"tea-like\" character when washed, and a very pleasantly intense fruitiness when naturally processed. I personally find them much more palatable than, for example, heavily \"chocolate\"-driven coffees from South America, or highly vegetal coffees from Kenya that can have a strong \"tomato paste\" aroma.","date":"2024-12-27","sentiment":"positive"},{"productId":"breville-barista-exp","source":"reddit","sourceUrl":"https://www.reddit.com/r/BrevilleCoffee/comments/1hnbbvb/breville_barista_express_setting_for_beginners/","author":"dpbrown777","rating":null,"text":"Find on YouTube the videos about an espresso salami shot. If you know this stuff already feel free to skim. -Combo machines have some significant downsides, the biggest being cleaning and reliability. In my opinion, cleaning combo machines eliminates any convenience one may find in the combo setup. -Combo machines also compromise both on grinding capability and espresso extraction as a rule; there’s no real need for this, but the market that purchases combo machines is usually looking for something simple, and that’s associated with “less picky” in the mind of the manufacturer. This means you get less even coffee particles after grinding (the small ones overextract and get bitter, while the large ones underextract and don’t contribute as much to the flavor, resulting in watery, bitter espresso) and the actual espresso machine faces a big temperature drop-off while cold water is getting pushed into the boiler. This is due to lower thermal mass (aluminum boiler in the Breville vs brass in the Lelit, plus just less metal used in the grouphead). I can’t find boiler sizes for the Breville but I’d also bet the boiler itself is smaller. -Breville doesn’t have a great reputation in the espresso world, but that’s because it’s a consumer machine competing against “prosumer” (ie commercial build quality for home use) machines. They are going to be more akin to a dishwasher or toaster in reliability/build quality than, let’s say, a commercial range. They are also harder to fix due to proprietary parts. But, the cost is also lower as a result. -Lelit has good to great build quality and look excellent IMO. They are simple machines and the PID is commercial grade. It’s very unlikely anything will go wrong with it for a long time, and if something does break, it will be relatively easy to fix (compared to the Breville) with off-the-shelf parts (vibe pump, commercial electrical switches, etc). -The Lelit will have better shot starting temperature accuracy due to the PID, and better intrashot temperature stability due both to the PID and thermal mass—they put more metal in the grouphead. The Breville also has a PID, but it’s more of a pseudo-PID type algorithm run from a consumer grade chip.* -The Lelit will require a few hundred dollars towards a good espresso grinder. The Lelit PL53 (~$300) or Baratza Sette 30 ($270) would be enjoyable, and another $100-$200 will make this machine really shine. Vario would be awesome with that machine at $500 or so. You might be able to squeeze by with an Encore ($140), but I wouldn’t recommend that. Anything less and you’re better off with the Breville. You can save a ton by buying used here. In summary, the Lelit has better build quality, better espresso potential, and (imo) more convenience, but it requires another $250-$500 in investment for a grinder that will make it shine. The Lelit with a good grinder will knock the socks off the Breville, you just need to decide how to best deploy your resources. In conclusion, what’s your budget? We’ll be able to point you in the right direction. *PID is technically an algorithm, ie only software, but a PID *controller* is an industry term for a commercial grade controller often seen in food processing plants. What Breville advertises as a PID is the software, while Lelit includes a piece of hardware that you might find in your local brewery or creamery. The latter costs around 500 times more than the micro controller used in the Breville, and that’s due solely to build quality.","date":"2019-11-24","sentiment":"positive"},{"productId":"breville-barista-exp","source":"reddit","sourceUrl":"https://www.reddit.com/r/Coffee/comments/e0m587/breville_barista_express_espresso_machine_or/","author":"SnooOnions5524","rating":null,"text":"Hi, A bit late here but hope some people will still find my \"review\" helpful in making a decision about the Lelit Anita PLM042TEMD. I had a Sage Barista Express before which starting leaking from the group head after two years, and while it was being repaired ( still in warranty) I decided to buy a Lelit ( impulse buy after not having a espresso machine for two months). The way I see it is the Sage Barista Express is like a VW ID3 . Yes it's a well known Volkswagen and yes it looks cool and freshly designed, but it's too electronicky if you know what I mean. While the Lelit is like a vintage italian sports car from a not so famous manufacturer that looks like crap and doesn't have seatbelts but is hella powerful and has analog toggle switches instead of buttons. The Lelit is much more powerful than the BE when it comes to the steam and group head pressure. It's impossible to clog it if you put too much coffee in the basket for example , since it powers through whatever. The build quality is great and you can really feel the difference in the materials. The space between the group head and the tray is shorter than the BE so take that into consideration if you're using scales and the grinder is decent although louder than the BE and very responsive when pressing the trigger( kinda feels like it spins faster and slows down faster). You need to hold the portafilter at all times when grinding since it does not have a support like the BE. It does not have a separate hole for the water, so if you want to make tea or Americano you just have to use the water than comes out of the steam wand( at a pretty high pressure). When it comes to descaling it's much more simple than BE since all you have to do is put in the descaler in the container with water and run the water manually through the group head and the steam wand. It doesn't run a specific descaling program like BE. Same goes for the group head cleaning. It does not come with a blind basket( the one with no holes for cleaning) nor with a hard water filter like the white plastic one that you find by default in the BE's container. It also doesn't include any brushes or cleaning tools. All of the above need to be purchased separately. It has a old scool italian style tamper that's built in, the one where the tamper is hanging from the machine and you need to push the basket upwards towards it. Since the machine is lighter than the Barista Express it will move when twisting the handle or when using the built in tamper so you need to hold it in place. The tray can contain more water than the BE but it's kinda weird to get it out and not as smooth as it is with Sage. The installation of the hard water filter is also not as smooth as it is with Sage where it just clicks in at the bottom of the container. Instead what you need to do is to fit in one of the plastic tubes into the filter's valve, sort of like trying to fit a ballon on a helium tank. You also need to remove, replace and re-install that filter every time you descale. It heats up way faster than Sage and the first thing I noticed is how hot it is to the touch. You can seriously burn yourself if you accidentally touch the group head when putting in the portafilter and the cup tray is pretty warm compared to BE. Also the switch between the different modes like brewing or steaming is faster and the temperature is much more stable due to the built in PID and temp indicator ( which is super reliable). The only thing is that the BE does an automatic purge when switching from steaming to brewing which the Lelit doesn't ( you need to do it manually by activating two switches and the steam wand or wait until it cools of by itself since it's using different temperatures for each mode). It's possible to dial the desire temperatures for brewing or steaming and also the size of the grind. And finally the coffee is great if you have fresh beans available but the shot is not as creamy as it on the Sage no matter what I do. You get a blonder shot with less crema but that's just how it's designed to be I guess because of the pressure and the shape of the baskets🤷‍♂️. Oh and the basket is 57mm which makes it hard to find accessories . Overall I kinda like this machine and don't regret the purchase. It's great for what it can do in this price range and recommend it. Sage just bought Lelit so that means we'll be seeing some similarities between the two models and possibly some improvements.
